Last jumbo roll of paper produced at the Tasman mill

30.06.2021

After 66 years of continuous newsprint production at the Tasman mill, the last jumbo roll of paper was produced today on the Tasman newsprint machine. After a 6-month strategic review of the mill, its closure along with the sale of the mill’s assets was decided earlier this month.

The closure after 66 years is a special and sad moment, especially for the employees. I would like to thank everyone who has worked at the mill for their outstanding contribution throughout the years, and their significant efforts to ensure a long and good life for the mill,” says Sven Ombudstvedt, CEO of Norske Skog.

The decision to close the mill follows a detailed review and addresses the imbalance between newsprint production capacity and customer demand in the Australasian region.

Norske Skog's annual newsprint capacity will be permanently reduced by approximately 150 000 tonnes following the closure. Norske Skog will honour all redundancy and contractual obligations to the mill’s approximately 160 employees as the mill moves towards shutdown in the third quarter.

The Norske Skog Boyer mill will thereby be the only domestic Australasian publication paper producer with a capacity of 150 000 tonnes newsprint and 135 000 tonnes LWC magazine paper. The Boyer mill will continue to serve the Australasian publication paper market under long-term contracts.
